From the Back Cover

Here are 288 remarkably lifelike drawings of animals, furnishing artists and students with an easy-to-follow method of instruction in the drawing of horses, dogs, lions, cows and bulls, stags, and goats. So detailed and so accurate are these drawings that this book has long been a classic work of its kind. The animals are shown in three ways: external full views and dozens of details (paws, head, eyes, legs, etc.); beneath-the-skin drawings of musculature and of the positions and insertions of each muscle; and skeleton drawings of the bone structures that support and determine surface contours and configurations. In addition, special cross-sections dissect those portions of the animal—such as the head and limbs—that are most important to the artist. For this edition, Lewis S. Born of the American Museum of Natural History collected 25 plates from George Stubbs's Anatomy of the Horse, long unavailable; Straus-Durckheim's Anatomie Descriptive et Comparative du Chat; and Cuvier and Laurrillard's Anatomie Comparée. These plates, as fully annotated as the plates that make up the original book, supplement Ellenberger, Baum and Dittrich with anatomical drawings of the monkey, the bat, the flying squirrel, the rat kangaroo, the seal, and the hare. Mr. Lewis also provided a new preface and added to the annotated bibliography, which now contains 66 items. "Highly recommended as one of the very few books on the subject worthy of being used an an authoritative guide."—Design "Illustrators, sculptors, and taxidermists who draw or model animals will welcome this new revised edition."—Natural HistoryEnlarged (1956) edition, revised by Lewis S. Brown, American Museum of Natural History.

I'm a professional illustrator. I own two copies of this book. The old one, the one I have had for almost thirty years, is in pretty rough shape but it's beautiful! I bought another new copy thinking that it was time to put the old one out to pasture. This new printing, however, is atrocious. Is it bootleg? Print-on-demand? Every image is much too dark, and precious detail is lost. It's a damned shame, because it *ought* to be a stunning visual reference.

This edition is printed so terribly! The illustration plates are beautiful and I have borrowed this book from the local library to use for school projects and wanted my own copy on hand. When I finally got the book in the mail, I was surprised at the poor quality for the 2014 edition. The ink is so dark on most of the illustrations and you cannot see the details very well on the anatomical plates. The paper is terrible and it might have something to do with the how poorly the illustrations are printed. It feels like cheap construction paper used for kindergartners school projects.I think this is a good book for Beginner's to use as reference, but you're better off looking for an older edition of this book.

It's exactly what I needed. Very detailed drawings of animal bones, muscles and animals in general. Very easy to understand location of bones and muscles by looking at these pictures.UPD I read other review, saying that quality of images in newer prints/editions are bad, it's true. I had same experience with other Dover books, new prints were horrible, illustrations are awful and etc. This one I bought USED and all illustrations are of really good quality! I believe it is second edition, year 1956.Now, when I know that older editions of Dover books are not bad, I might change other books from them to Used older versions.

Figured I post a review of this book since this is my second time purchasing it over the years. I bought it again recently for a class in creature design I'm taking next semester. The book only spotlights 5 or so animals, but they are the most common animals... which I guess that's more of an opinion, depending. The illustrations are detailed and show most of the major muscle groups and bone structure needed from the standard views (top, front, side, back, etc) and some close up detailed views of paws, mouths, legs, etc.Side note, I had this book about 10 years ago, wish I still had my old copy as the newer editions seem to be printed very, very dark. Some of the detail on the illustrations closed up in the printing which could be worst I suppose.. personally I would try to find a used copy of an older edition if possible as the details were much clearer and didn't print so dark.Still, it's a good reference book at a good price and worth the money despite the printing quality.

I wanted a book that specifically focused on horses. Anyonewhose drawn horses, even for years, knows that getting thisanimal down pat is no easy feat. Studying anatomy is a must. This is THE book.I have so much respect for the person who drew these plates. It's astounding work. The anatomy is shown from every angle;starting with skeletal plates, adding muscles and so forth, these plates "build" the horse from the inside out. Afterstudying the legs I cut myself some slack! This is a verybeautiful, complex animal. No wonder this is such a challengingsubject! There are smaller additional sections on a few animals as abonus. I found the cat skull study to be immensely helpful.I don't recommend this book for anyone who wants a how-toon every animal in the world, this isn't for you. Nor is it forbeginning artists. It is for serious artists who want to doin depth study of horses because we can't all just walk outsideand see horses everywhere. There's nothing like the real thing, but this is a good second choice when the real thing isn'tavailable for study. This is one of those books that I actually revere and am veryproud to have in my reference library. A serious resource forserious art study.

I have seen this book as a required text in several creature design and anatomy art classes. After getting much use out of an E-book version, I decided to get the hard copy as well. Its THAT useful! While I've noticed some reviews complain that it only features 5 animals, I might note that these are some of the most commonly used species in art, and the common house cat isn't going to vary that dramatically from the anatomy of a lion, past proportions. I LOVE the amount of detail given to each and every species, with pages of full orthographics from every angle, with specific focus given to the heads and limbs. There are also proportion scales provided.A HIGHLY recommended resource to anyone with an interest in zoology, anatomy, or creature design.

As many have said, the printing is way too dark. White cows are dark gray and so are bones. Sent it back. What a shame; it is a fantastic reference, without peer as far as I know.

I am an animal artist - this book is a bible for artists - it is important to understand the creatures before painting them and this book does all of that. it is also great if a person has not painted for sometime and to refresh their knowledge is a must and this book is essential for that.
